Hey everyone! So I just removed the old tile around my fireplace (large tiles and of course the drywall ripped off), and I’m replacing the wall tile around the fireplace with some heavy-ish marble tiles that won’t need grouting and measure about 24”x6”. As you can tell from the photo the old tile was adhered to the metal fireplace box in places and from what I’ve read thinset isn’t going to work in these areas. Additionally, as you can see I have a significant gap between the woodwork and the stud where the new drywall will go. My plan was to install 2 or three wood supports on each side mounted to the two studs in between so I can screw the drywall into there to prevent sagging with the heavy tile, although I’m kind of worried about the large stretch across the top where there’s no where to mount additional support for the new drywall - any suggestions here would be greatly appreciated. My main question is does anyone have any recommendations for mounting the tile to the metal areas of the firebox given the heavy nature of the tile. I don’t think we’ll be converting this from a decorative fireplace to a working gas fireplace, so hopefully this helps.photo via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2OYdGsR
