I'll try to keep this short and sweet but around this time last year my girlfriend at the time (now ex-girlfriend) was almost completely broke for about a month. She quit her ~70k/year job in order to become a fashion vlogger. This went nowhere fast and she ended up having to take a job making about $11/hour.

Right around the start of last December, she was complaining everyday how she didn't have enough money for her bills and for "shopping". A few days before Christmas, she stopped complaining about money completely and I noticed she bought presents for most of her family. I thought that was weird but I figured her parents probably gave her some money and didn't think much more about it.

Fast forward 2 months later and she doesn't feel I'm supportive enough of her vlogging "career" (just checked and she has about 400 Youtube subscribers) and she breaks up with me. I'm fine with it since she was kind of mopey almost constantly while we were together.

Thursday, I went to the bank to get pre-approved for a car loan and apparently there is a collection company wanting $5500 from a credit card that I've literally never seen or signed up for in my life. When I called to ask what it was about they had the original address on file as my ex-girlfriend's apartment.

Of course I'm livid now, I'm not paying $5500 and it's tanked my credit score a couple hundred points. The person working for the collection agency said I could just pay a small amount while it gets sorted. I said no and hung up. I can drive my current car for probably another couple of years at least but it scares me that if it broke down tomorrow, I'd be screwed. What's the best course of action here?
