My cousin was crossing a street in a downtown 20 mph zone when he was hit by a motorcyclist going 70 mph (police chasing him at the time insist it wasn’t their fault and all protocol was being properly followed).
Despite nearly dying, he is now well on the road to recovery (not sure how many years of physical therapy it will take to get him walking again), but his medical bills are now well over half a million dollars and that has quite surpassed the motorcyclist’s insurance cap.
The family is vaguely aware of a few avenues that could be taken (declaring medical bankruptcy has been mentioned), but I think he should gather all the particulars of his situation and make a detailed post somewhere on reddit to solicit advice in this matter. The only particulars I’m aware of is he has little to no debt and a $25k savings account. Any suggestions on where such a post could be made? Naturally if anyone wants to provide advice based on my post alone that would be appreciated as well, but I’m mainly looking for the most effective place to post.
Edit: this took place in KS, USA
