https://imgur.com/a/fueDOwRMy daughter recently bought a house and today she asked me to come over and install a new swag type chandelier to replace the one she has. Simple I thought. What I saw when I got there was a mess, and I don't know how the house inspection people let this pass. Perhaps someone can help me understand what they did and how to fix it.An explanation of the image: The house was built in the 60's and the beams are exposed in the living room. The black and white wires coming from the top of the picture are part of the original house wiring. That cable goes into the crawl space and I don't know where from there. There is no ground wire. There is another cable coming in from the left which snakes along the ceiling and runs directly to some strip ceiling lights. As you can see, this cable is directly connected to the original wiring using wire nuts. (instead of a junction box) And since the original house wire did not have a ground, whoever did this simply snipped off the ground wire of the newer cable. Somehow, these lights are controlled by a wall switch. Lastly, there is a single white wire which runs along the wall to a different switch which controls the swag light. You can see the swag light connected to the white cable (spliced) supplying the power and also to the single white wire going to the switch.(Also notice what looks like a burn mark on the cable coming in from the left)This can't possibly be safe, or code. Anyone have any ideas on how to rememdy this please? via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2CwogFK
