If you had to buy only one midlayer (directly under topcoat / shell, directly over office wear), and you wanted the warmest, thinnest option, would you choose a quilted-type jacket, a compact down-type jacket, or something else?
Feel free to add specific brands, but I’m first trying to determine which type of thin midlayer (quilted, compact down, other) is warmest.
I’d prefer the style of quilted but I’m hypothesizing compact down is warmest. If that’s the case, any argument against Uniqlo’s affordable ultra light down?
EDIT: my distinction between quilted and compact down specifically refers to the style of stitching, I believe. I realize quilted jackets are sometimes filled with down. I'm trying to determine if there's a significant difference in warmth between something like a Barbour quilted or something like a Uniqlo ultra light down.
