In the past I've tended to hold less riskier stocks in my retirement accounts, and leaned towards index funds over individual stocks. The thinking was that this is my future security and I shouldn't expose it to high risk. However, more recently I've been thinking the opposite. Assuming one has 30+ years until retirement, and that the goal is to maximize total portfolio value (retirement and non-retirement) at the end of 30 years, then shouldn't I put my riskier holdings in retirement accounts?
Looking at it from the other angle, since I won't take money out of retirement account for a long time, as I will always take money out of my brokerage account first if I need the money, then shouldn't I put less riskier holdings in my brokerage account?
