I’ve had a $20 Wahl “7-in-1” model plug-in massager/vibrator for 15 years. Not sure if it was technically BIFL because my first one shorted and caught fire in 2006, after years and years of daily use. (Although tbf it wasn’t the motor that failed— the short was in the cord because I never treated it properly and the insulation eventually wore away.)
My second one has worked perfectly since then, although it now runs a bit distractingly loud from being dropped on the floor post-use so many times. So I picked up a new one from walgreens the other day.
Ugh.
Wahl discontinued the 7-in-1, replacing it with an updated model called the “All body massager.” It’s larger, louder, and HALF as powerful. I fell asleep unsatisfied last night. I’m so sad and mad. I even went on ebay and looked at used models.
You guys — anyone who relied on the old Wahl— be honest, does anything else on the market compare? Especially to the low setting, so intense and powerful but smoooooth, not percussive or jackhammery at all?
I tried some wevibes once for a while — they were close at first to the vibration quality of the old Wahl and they’re quieter and cordless but they are a complete BIFL FAIL— the motors or maybe the rechargeable batteries always slowly die over a year or two and the whole thing has to be replaced, and they’re always updating them. So I’m not super excited to drop another $70-100 on another one. But maybe I have to.
I’ve read that the hitachi magic wand is louder and less intense, more of a percussive, jackhammery vibration, and on top of that has also been “updated” recently to be crappier.
Ugh the old wahl served me so well from age 20 to age 35, i feel like i’ll never have it that good again and I’m so so sad.
