My SO and I share a 2bd/1.5ba townhome, complete with a one car garage and patio for $1525/mo which includes utilities. We have an opportunity to move to a 1bd/1ba also with a garage and patio for $1295/mo with utilities. We have talked about getting a smaller place since it’s just the two of us and our dog, but are struggling to pull the trigger on this.
While we will be down a bedroom and bath the actual square footage is about half of what we have now. So it feels like we are giving up a lot more than just the bedroom and bathroom. In terms of use, while we don’t have guests stay in that room a ton it is nice to have it available. We also use the room for the occasional yoga session or workout on the stationary bike that’s in there. I also use that bathroom to get ready for work since our morning routines overlap, which is helpful.
On the flip side, we do want to save for a home and are talking about getting married so saving any amount would be helpful for our future goals. But we know we can “makeup” that amount through small changes, like him taking lunch to work more or me not spending so much in groceries.
So, back to the question in the posts title, would it be worth it to downsize?
