I want to begin by emphasizing that I am in no way, shape, or form advertising this book or receiving a benefit by discussing it. I hate that I feel the need to provide some kind of disclaimer like this but unless proven otherwise I will keep it up. Now, to my actual post...
I've stumbled my way across this book just now because as a young man (20 years old) I've run headlong into the very unfortunate realization that I am staring down the barrel of 50 years in a box (aka an office job) doing something that does not fulfill me in the slightest way. Now this is somewhat of an exaggeration, but the stark reality of it is that unless I can do something about it, I will be giving up a third of my waking hours (8 hour work day) on a job making money for someone else that I don't know or care about - that is a thought that I can't bear to think. The common reply to that is well, why don't you just go and find a job you like? "Do what you love and the money will follow!" The trouble with that is, converting passions or interests to a full time payable job mostly goes one of two ways: it doesn't pay the bills, or it pays nothing (i.e can't be converted to a job). I'm worried about rambling so I'll cut it short - I'm worried that I won't get to live the one life I'm given on my own terms, and I'm terrified that I'll waste the best years of my life on something that doesn't matter to me, so I'm going to do everything I can to avoid it.
SO.... In my quest to avoid becoming a wage-slave I just now stumbled across this guy, Mark Boyle - link - and I've never read so much truth that resonates with me in my life. Tl;dr he lived without money for 3 years and wrote a book about it. I'm sharing this here because you guys seem to enjoy the idea of living with less, and he's someone who has taken that idea and turned the dial up to 11, literally living without spending a cent. I guess I'm just sharing this in the hopes that anyone else here can relate to what I'm feeling, and if they are they may or may not find this gentleman's ideas interesting or helpful too.
Thank you for reading!
