I'm going to be graduating college in May and will be moving to NYC to work full time in September. My pretax salary is approx 85k and I wanted to know what % of my salary should realistically be allocated to rent. My job is 80% travel, so I will have no expenses from Monday to Thursday. I anticipate having monthly expenses of $50 for commuting on Fri/Sat/Sun, $350 for food/discretionary purchases, and $80 for internet/utilities depending on the number of roommates I find. Phone bill is paid for by my company and insurance is covered by my parents plan. My employer also matches 50% of the first 6% of my 401k and I plan to dump 6%. I have no student loans and have roughly 8k in my savings and 2k in my portfolio from past internships. Thanks in advance for all the help.
