https://imgur.com/a/DZYFo3BHere's the tldr; I lost some of the original, wooden game pieces to a board game and I wanted to recreate them on cut dowel pieces. Unfortunately after spending hours attempting to copy the originals, the first line and second line of copies did not come out as expected. Some details about the original: The original pieces having the following characteristics- are wood- have a concave center with engraving- are tapered (curves towards the top and bottom of the piece if you look at it from the sides)- are very smooth to the touch (as you can see from the first three pictures in the linkMore details about the pictures (centimeter side of a ruler is given for reference)Pic 1: There are three different columns of game pieces. The first column to the far left has the originals. The middle is the first attempt (with two pieces shown). And the last column is shown to the far right with one piece shown.Pic 2: This picture is just like the above (same order) except the pieces are flipped upside down.Pic 3: This is just like Pic 1 and Pic 2 but instead has the pieces on their sidesPic 4: These are dowel chips that were cut from a local shop. These are what eventually became the first and second attempt pieces (columns 2 and 3).Pic 5: All the rotary engraving tips and bits are shown so you know what I have to work withPic 6: This is all the paint I have used. In the first attempt (column 2) I sprayed the Satin Clear Enamel on the piece after it was painted. However on the second attempt (column 3) I did not use the Satin and stuck with red paint only. Either way, the first and second attempt batches came out rough. I even tried sanding the second attempt batch and wiping them down with a wet cloth. My struggle is whether I could get it smooth before or after the paint is applied. The biggest issue is that I can't quite get the engraving or texture of the originals, and I don't know how to. Using the pictures of what I have and your knowledge, is anyone able to help out and describe the procedure needed to recreate the originals as best as possible? I've tried this for weeks, have brought the pieces to a masonry expert, and brought them to a hardware store. But the best advice from them thus far was use a rotary tool and to sand it.If more information is needed, please let me know. Thanks and hope to hear your input! via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2JcMmpC
