I need some help. I searched around on details or codes, but still don't feel safe approaching the actual building of this thing until I feel a bit more safe.Details:In my apartment I'm going ot move into, there is a gas fireplace much like the one pictured below on the left. When they put in the fireplaces they created these caddy-corner situations, ruining a beautiful opportunity to make a built in mantel-shelf or whatever. I don't know why they didnt just block in where the fireplace is, either way rant over on that - i want to build my own custom version.Mainly because I'd like to have an inlet for the TV mount to push into (and either i'm going to hang art in front of on hinges that lifts up to reveal the tv, or put a framed 2-way (1 way? idk the term correctly) mirror over it - havent decided. Anyways being that it's an apartment I need to build false walls like this for wire-hiding and such so I thought it would be cool to do it all over the fireplace, it's the best spot in my floorplan for the tv to go.I've read details like the surround must be 6 inches away from fire-opening, and for every 1/8 inch need another inch of clearance... so I understand that in my mind, but code-websites don't have any diagrams to make sure i am understanding correctly. On top of that I'd just like to know what materials are okay to surround the fireplace. Do I need something like metal to go around the opening? Or ceramic or something? Or will painted wood do? And if wood is okay, is there special paint that goes in there to hold up with the heat that pours out?I think that is all my questions for now. If anyone reads this also from ohio, or even summit county ohio and knows of any extra special codes I should be aware of (i couldnt find any) that would be helpful as well.https://ift.tt/2DPUY6p via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2IzsgoU
