In response to /u/candid_canuck’s cry for an intervention, I present this readily available, modern-day electronic device that is the epitome of BIFL.
It’s durable, made of strong materials that will show wear but withstand daily use. It’s practical, made to do a few things perfectly. And it’s proven to last by telling time, the very essence of withstanding time.
It’s solar powered; I’ve never needed to replace a battery. It’s atomic; I’ve never needed to adjust for summer/fall time changes or correct for imprecision. It has a perpetual calendar; the day and date are always correct and will be for the next 100 years, despite leap years and the inconsistent number of days in each month.
I’ve used it below sea level while scuba diving, at high altitudes while mountain climbing, in the blistering heat of Colombia’s north desert, in the chilling cold of Patagonia. With salt water, sand, snow, you name it.
I’ve worn this analog CASIO G-Shock GW-4000D every day for the last 6 years, and there is no end in sight.
If you’re looking for a watch that is set-it-and-forget-it, buy-it-for-life, spend the $500 on this one.
