  • I am starting a new job where I'll be making $45,000 gross per year. I will be living in a city with a pretty high city wage tax so I estimate my monthly net income to be around $2800, but I'm not totally sure how accurate that is, as I haven't yet registered for a health insurance plan or public transportation, which is pre-tax.
  • I have no debts/loans and around $11,000 in the bank. No car.
  • I'm looking at a 600 sq. ft. apartment whose rent is $1100 per month including all utilities except for electricity (internet is included in the rent which is great). Electricity seems like it would max out around $75. The place is in an awesome neighborhood about a 20 minute walk or quick trolley ride from my work.
  • I don't have any fancy hobbies and I lead a pretty simple lifestyle -- i.e. I'm just fine eating the same chicken breast and broccoli and rice every day, I typically have a very small social budget.

EDIT: Thanks to everyone who answered! I've talked to the landlords and they are willing to let me do a 6-month lease with the opportunity to renew it at the end. I'll see how it goes, and if it ends up looking like I'm not going to be able to save any money, I'll cut my losses, move into a cheaper place, and chalk the experience up as a life lesson.
