Bernie Sanders is already declaring victory for having convinced Amazon to go to a $15 hourly wage, but I don’t think it is nearly as good for workers as Bernie thinks. These workers are now substantially more expensive, which makes it much more profitable to find a robotic replacement for warehouse workers that would make the $15 per hour. The move by Amazon to $15 per hour puts pressure on Walmart and Target to follow. However, it is way easier to replace warehouse workers with robots than store restockers in Walmart and Target. For one, the robots would have to navigate around human beings in the store. Second, people would notice if there are robots are wizzing around the store while no one realizes if Amazon warehouses are filled with people or robots. Amazon is just trying to sucker their competitors into following on $15 an hour so they can crush them once Amazon fills its warehouses with robots.
