We have all seen the posts (one of which was mine) complaining about people posting ancient stuff just because it's old and still works. We all know about survivorship bias, and cast iron skillets.
Every time, the mods agree and say they're making some kind of change or they'll look out for these posts more diligently, but they keep showing up and making it right to the top of this subreddit. MOST - ALMOST ALL - of the top content on this sub is no longer manufactured. Of those posts, a huge portion is re-posts, survivorship bias, antiques that are hard or impossible to find, or all three. For crying out loud.
What is it going to take to get this subreddit straightened out? What changes have the mods even made?
I'm perfectly willing to become a mod myself and wade through all the cast iron skillets and WWII knives and survivorship-biased tools, if that's what it takes. I'm just sick and tired of being sick and tired of this problem. I think this sentiment is probably shared, because I get the feeling that a lot of members here are, like myself, doers and fixers. Let's do something. Let's fix this problem instead of continuing to ignore it.
At the very least, we need to add a rule requiring a purchase link (anything that's in garage sales should also be on ebay) AND ENFORCE IT. Seriously, what is the deal with the lack of enforcement and moderation?
Maybe people are scared of this killing the sub due to a lack of new posts. I say FINE!! I would much rather we see new content only when there is actually new content, instead of posting garbage for the sake of seeing more posts. Otherwise we'll run into the same problem as CNN: we have to keep saying stuff and running stories even if there's nothing to say. I find that foolish and disgusting, and I don't want to see it happen here.
To be clear: I would rather have one new legitimate post per month than fifty posts per day of things that are or should be against this sub's rules.
