Hey all - I'm partially reflooring a room with new floorboards while keeping a large section of the old boards that are still in decent shape. I'm trying to preserve their historical appearance: cracked, dark maroon paint that's flaked or missing in several places, exposing bare wood (probably pine), but that has good adhesion and condition overall. What's the best way to prep and finish both the painted and bare sections so it's sealed and easy to clean? I'm tentatively using hard wax oil on the new boards so my first inclination is to lightly sand the old boards with a medium high grit to remove blemishes and ancient goo, then finish with the oil, but I have no idea if there's compatibility issues or other things I can't foresee. Unfortunately I don't know the composition of the old paint, but from what I gather most old floor paints were oil - however, the age of the paint isn't known as it could be from anywhere between the 1890's and 1970's.
