Hello r/personalfinace community,

My father, who has a german citizenship, went a personal trip to Los Angeles, CA just a few weeks ago. On the day of his flight back to Germany he suddenly went very sick. It turned out that he had a stroke which left his right arm and his right leg weakened. He cannot stand without held and has to rely on a wheelchair since then. Also he had to stay in the hospital for further check-ups. That happened on September 24th.

Today he was released from the hospital with a bill of 50.000 USD. He has a general insurance in Germany but not a foreign health insurance (which is ridiculous 20 Euro/year). It was my fault not to get him an additional insurance just because i didn't know it existed. The bill will be paid by a friend but that puts us in a huge guilt and in a big debt for that friend.

I talked with the insurance here in Germany but they said that they could not help us now because it cannot be paid in arrears (retroactive) anymore. The hospital will give him the papers and results about his stroke.

Is there a way for a foreign citizen who had to hospitalised into an US hospital to pay off the bill?

I would be glad for every suggestion from you guyy!

Edit: The friend of us is willing to pay the cost but I would rather find a direct approach to pay it to the hospital.
