Hey Guys,

Throw away account for obvious reasons.

Not sure if this is the appropriate place to post - but looking for some guidance.

My wife and I are in a pretty fortunate situation and I'm trying to ensure I make the most of it. We have been saving aggressively for the last seven years and have saved about 500k (not including retirement).

She teaches at a community college and has about 4 months off-contract per year, great benefits and has the opportunity to pick up extra classes to make more money. I work from home maintaining legacy software the people in my department use to make products.

Over the last three years my department (not team) has been decimated by layoffs. Most of our work is now done in India with a skeleton crew in the states. I work with a good friend and we both think we have two to three years left before they either outsource the work completely - or get a team in India familiar enough with the software that they can maintain it.

My wife and I like each other very much and have always wanted to work together. The idea was I could take advantage of no commute and double-dip by starting (or taking over) a business... and then if the layoffs come in a year or two, we are already a year or two into establishing our own business and it won't be too bad (hopefully).

However, as I have been looking at buying businesses, I've noticed that most businesses would be able to replace 1 - 1.5 of our incomes - but not both. Now I realize we don't need to make as much as we make - and I realize that the idea of a business is to grow it... but we both have good paying jobs (210k combined in a suburb of LA)... and if I was more aggressive with putting money in the market, (say for example, keep just a six month emergency fund liquid and put all of our savings into the market), we could make 80% of what the business would bring in (between 120 and 160k).

Is it a better idea to start/buy a business or use that money to make money? Does anyone have any experience to share? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks!
