I finally started investing in December upon graduation, and initially, my plan was to hold 5 sector ETFs to get started. Eventually i bought XAR, FTEC, XLF, and ITOT. I confused ITOT as an S&P500 fund, so understandably it didn't meet my expectations.

7 months later in July i was looking at my returns and unimpressed. Compared to VOO, VIOO, VOOG, and QQQ on my watch list, they weren't performing as i'd like. I sold, XLF and FTEC and bought some shares in VOO and QQQ. XAR has been doing well but i'll more than likely sell it once i find a suitable stock in aerospace defense.

In general, how do sector ETFs perform compared to the S&P500 or QQQ?

Would holding a large part of my money in S&P500, QQQ, and S&P 600 small cap make for good enough diversification for to only hold 10-15 stocks in my portfolio?
