Hi all, small story incoming.
Since I finished school, I was a good boy, went and got a degree, went straight into a related field (finance) and was earning close to 100k by 24. I grew tired of the lack of fulfilling work finance provides.
A friend worked with a large retailer here in Australia that was growing aggressively. He asked if I’d like to join for about a 40% pay cut. I did because the earning potential was there with a profit share style agreement. I excelled quickly and opened up a new store within 3 months. 6 months after that I was promoted to oversee 3 states and 50% of the shops in Australia. I poured my soul into the role, sacrificing virtually anything for success.
We achieved short term success but my mental state deteriorated to a state where my family and friends were worried. I stepped out of the role/was pushed out. I am now back to looking after a single store. I enjoy the people but I am struggling to not think about the amazing world out there full of possibilities to use my skill set. However I can’t just apply for a high level management role like I used to hold, at my age I have been told several times that the staff pool won’t respond well.
Ultimately I need advice on what to do. Is a job in a field you are passionate about truly that much better where pay doesn’t matter? Is 12k enough to take a summer off and find my mojo again? Would there be ways to earn a supplementary income?
Thanks for reading, I’d love to hear what you think.
