Hey everybody. Novice thing-maker here. About a month ago I decided that I wanted to make myself a TV stand so I'd have an excuse to buy myself a TV. Here is the result:The finished TV stand, in useI used standard pine boards from Menards for everything. The arches are made of 1x8s, cut at 45° with my back saw and shaped with a jigsaw. I then joined the two halves together with wood glue. To clamp the pieces together at the angle, I made a bracket to hold the pieces.Gluing an arch miterI also cut a rectangular notch out of the bottom front edge of each arch, and cut a rectangular hole in the bottom shelf where each arch base would go.Like a puzzle pieceThe bottom trim is made of 1x4s with the decorative cuts done with a coping saw.The front trimI used screws to attach the front trim to the bottom shelf, where they would be hidden under the arches when assembled.A bit of sneaky lazinessFor the back supports, I also cut notches out of both the uprights and the bottom shelf with the coping saw, so they fit together like this:https://ift.tt/2O01wDd bottom shelf I screwed together with four 1x2s.https://ift.tt/2OF0rOh side trim I glued on.The entire bottom shelf, after sandingThe top shelf I glued edge to edge. The top shelf, after gluing and sandingTo keep the upper end of the arches from sliding around in these slots, I added dowels here and drilled corresponding holes for the arch pieces.https://ift.tt/2NXRP8t also used dowels to align the top shelf as it sits on top of the arches. The middle shelf is suspended with small chains and eye hooks.Testing assembly, with the top off to show the hanging shelf. After a couple weeks spent sanding every piece with 60, 100 or 120, 150, and 220 grit sandpaper, I stained everything with Minwax Red Oak #215 stain. The beginning of the staining processAfter that, I finished everything up with two coats of semigloss fast-drying polyeurethane.Because durability and SHINYOnce that dried, I just had to put all the pieces together (and they can disassemble easily as well for when I move, which is kinda convenient) and it was done.TADALet me know what you think; there's definitely room for improvement but overall I am quite pleased with the result. via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2MQaluM
