I have virtually no experience working with wood, but am part way through restoring this annunciator.I've successfully stripped away all the black paint, sanded, and have begun varnishing. I'm 4 coats in, using this water-based clear gloss varnish and a bog-standard synthetic brush.I'm getting brush-marks in the finish with each coat. I don't think I'm applying it too thick, and I'm using a light touch. However, as I'm varnishing I can see the lines where the bristles pass, and they don't completely smooth out as the varnish dries. All the advice I can find online is about preparing previous coats prior to the topcoat, but since every coat sets with new brush marks I don't see how I can ever achieve the glassy topcoat that I'd like regardless of how smooth the surface is on the coat beneath. It already looks a thousand times better and I'm pleased with the results despite the brush marks. But in the interests of perfectionism, what might I be doing wrong? via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2QsrpKw
