I really messed up my credit score/Chex when I was younger / in college, and am slowly working to rebuild. However, I am currently unable to open a checking account which has put me in a really bad situation where my primary account is an online-only bank.

I went into Wells Fargo yesterday to see if I could open an Opportunity Checking account which I was told is a second-chance account. However, the agent/teller said that her system didn’t allow it and that I should check my chexsystems report for further information. I did check, and I believe the reason I’m being barred is due to an old debit card that was overdrafted (mind you, this was 3 years ago) and subsequently closed.

What are my options here? I’m making steady progress in fixing my credit with a few secured cards, but it’s been really hard without a proper checking account and all the limitations that come with online-only banks. My landlord uses Venmo for rent and I’ve literally been paying my rent in cash because Venmo doesn’t allow debit cards from online banks. I also work as a server at the moment, and any of my cash tips that I want to put into my account has to be done through a CVS kiosk, with a service fee of $4.95 every time. Those are just two examples.

Would it help if I maybe spoke to a supervisor about the opportunity checking? I’m just so lost with this and any help is appreciated.
