I play this video game called Anno. It's a german city building / resource management game. You build Peasant houses for people, and supply them with fish and beer and church to meet their needs. When you have enough of them a new class appears: Citizens. They need the original fish, beer, and church, but also need clothing and a tavern. Once you have enough Citizens, Patricians appear, and after them Noblemen, both classes which need more expensive and sophisticated goods - fur coats, candlesticks, meat, books, etc.
Recently I was reminded of this game while going through my usual exercise:
- Step 1: OMG I hate my job
- Step 2: Read /r/simpleliving and /r/financialindependence
- Step 3: Review my budget to figure out what I can spend less money on, and try to see things that I treat as needs but are really wants
- Step 4: Realize that if I take my lunch to work and drink less I can make a big difference
Anyway - my point is that I like the game illustration of the production of new needs by new classes. Once we see those for what they are, we have choices.
