Hi Reddit, I have a question and I'm hoping that you can help me.

The question is more complicated than it sounds. The washer I need is not for me, it's for my mom. She's not very well off financially and my husband and I pretty much take care of her. She lives in her own home that we own, and that we take care of, and when she needs it we help her out financially like with repairs or whatever. Well her washer broke yesterday, and I need to find one for her. The thing is, if it was just her doing laundry, I would buy a used washer because she's pretty respectful of her appliances and knows how to take care of things. However my deadbeat sister and her deadbeat daughter and my deadbeat father all use this washing machine as well, and they're so rough on everything. I can't begin to name all of the things that they've broken long before they should have. As a matter of fact, they're the reason the washer is broken in the first place.

So my question is, would it be more frugal to buy a very cheap used washer for $50 (that may break in a year), or invest in a very high quality washer like a Speed Queen that's meant to take abuse? From what I've seen, the speed Queen is around $1000+. I would love to hear your opinions. Thanks!

EDIT: I'm going up to my mom's house to give the washer a look later on, and see first of all if the problem is easy to fix. I'm not super handy but I can at least follow a how to video on YouTube. Then, if it's not an easy fix, I'm going to call around appliance shops and see if anyone has a used old reliable model available just to see what my options are. Thanks for the advice!
