Before I got a kitten last March after the passing of my long term cat, I did some research into pet insurance. Technically, this was to be MY first pet; Max, the previous cat, was my parents. Many people stated it is probably a waste and to put aside money each month into an account. I decided to err on the side of caution, and I am happy that I did.
My research lead me to Happy Paws (I looked at many different companies and reviews). My policy was a $250 deductible for a 90% reimbursement rate for $17 and change a month. The app was easy to use, the reviews were overwhelming positive, and their customer service was quick when I had questions before I even signed up.
Last night there was an incident with Clementine. I have a basement gym that I use for some of my workouts, and she will wander downstairs and play with toys and such. She has never had any problems climbing on certain things... her balance is superb. Well, I was stretching when I heard her cry in pain. She was on a Total Gym that is like 3 feet off of the ground at its highest. She scurried along the ground and wouldn't use her back leg. Great.
I rush her to our local vet who closed in an hour. She was combative and upset, so they suggested she stay so they could sedate her, give her meds, take xrays, and whatever. I left and they called me an hour and a half later stating she broke her femur and will need surgery. So, hopefully she gets surgery today, as she sent over pictures and information to a surgeon that they use.
The original cost was to be between $450-$600ish if it was a strain. For a break and the necessary surgery? It can run around of over $2k!
According to my plan, both emergency care and surgery are covered. So instead of the $2k+, I will probably pay my deductible and some other comparatively minor expenses. All for $17/month. I have to suggest insurance, even just for peace of mind. In the 18 years we had our last cat we never had an accident like this. This little kitten is 10 months old and breaks the biggest bone in her body!
