My landlord called and asked to talk to my wife and I. She said that her husband is ill and they were having hard times on money.
I was not home when when she came to talk, so my wife met with her. My landlord claimed that the house we currently live in was a large tax burden on her last year.
She told my wife that she wanted to put the utilities of the house we are renting in her name and asked my wife if we could pay our rent in cash.
My wife agreed, and once my landlord left she called and told me this. It immediately threw up red flags for me. It's clear my landlord is trying to do something funny with her taxes.
I know that I should not agree to what she is asking, but I am not aware of the tax implications. Please help!
