At the age of 29, after about 10 years of trying to "define my style" and "build a capsule wardrobe," I finally realized that I don't need to do either of those things!
I can buy clothes frugally, and it doesn't have to fit in to some pre-defined idea of what my style should look like. It doesn't have to be a "wardrobe staple" or a "statement piece," or anything that even makes sense with the rest of my closet. As long as I love it and know I will wear it, it's probabaly a good purchase.
I just wanted to put that out there for anyone who, like me, has struggled with this desire to have a curated, intentional, minimalist wardrobe. I'm frugal by nature, and tend to keep my closet quite minimal, but it's mostly because I get rid of stuff often. It's not because I'm super great at being intentional about my purchases. And it's okay.
Also, it makes thrifting a lot easier and more enjoyable when you're not questioning every item in relation to your style. (Buy that floral top! Those teal pants! They look great on you!)
To those who make a capsule wardrobe work, I envy you, but I will never be you. And I accept it.
ETA: Have you had any similar revelations? What is your frugal fashion philosophy? Does a capsule wardrobe work for you?
