To make a long story short: I live in New York City, and it's recently dawned on me that I won't live here forever. In considering this, I began feeling the urge to document my life up here: the buildings, the skylines, the scenery, my commute, my apartment, the times I share with friends, etc. And not just with an iPhone, but with a really good camera, one that could capture these images with crisp clarity, and produce results that I may one day (potentially) frame.

As this desire has grown, I've also realized that it presents a natural opportunity for me to start (slowly) learning photography. To be clear: I know that buying really good camera doesn't automatically make you a photographer. My hope is just that I buy a camera that's well-suited to someone who may try to learn the art.

My aim is to keep the price no higher than $500 to $600, and my hope is to get crisp, clear, rich images that I can treasure for a lifetime. Ideally, it'd also be able to take pictures from long distances, and do a decent job of magnifying images (should I want to take close-ups).

Do any of you have any suggestions?
