I wonder whether we actually live very complicated lives packed full of media or entrenched in a web of complex systems (housing, public infrastructure, commerce, banking, etc), but we fool ourselves into thinking we live simply because our smartphones, tiny homes, and library cards keep all that hidden away. The people truly living simply aren't going to be on Reddit justifying whatever gadgets they're using, or praising their lack of televison in their urban apartment, because they don't have the gadgets and they're not living in a city.
I just wonder whether we need to get off the Titanic altogether instead of just switching rooms.
