I don't know if I'm asking for advice so much as I need to rant about this..

Background: My mom quit school at 16 and is VERY financially unsavvy... Her preferred mode of "investment" is putting money in a savings account for the 0.05% interest rate. She has a deathly fear of stocks, saying they will give her a heart attack because of the risk. When I started investing in my 20s, she told me not to touch stocks because my dad lost money on forex (she conflates all non-savings-account investment strategies as the same thing. It gets worse, read on).

Anyway, my grandmother passed away about a year ago, and my mom and two aunts were cleaning out my grandparents' house (my grandfather passed many years before) when lo and behold, they find an envelope chock full of stock papers. My aunt used to work in a bank and is known to be unscrupulously selfish / greedy, habitually screwing people over. This aunt says she wants the stocks, knowing that my mom and other aunt don't understand what they are. In fact my mom thinks that stocks are inherently "risky", even if they're free (ARGH), so she gladly hands them over. The best part is that my mom told me this info in passing, while telling me the gory details of their months-long battle over my grandma's old tea towels. I can't even-

ARGH
