If you have a rich parent and they are remarried you should ask them to see a copy of their will or whatever estate planning documents they have so your lawyer can review them. There are too many of these stories of how do i get the money back after it's spent. just ask the old man or old lady to see the docs and if they put up resistance just show them a copy of this article. then ask them don't you want to make sure your grandchildren get what's theirs. After the docs are reviewed have them patched up so you know the money will flow to you. Get your name on the investment accounts so you have to sign when $$$ is withdrawn. Get stuff retitled while the person is still alive let the step monster have a life estate in the house etc...
