I recently applied for a credit card through my longtime bank’s website.

I got a good offer, and got interrupted before I could click “accept.” The website timed out, and upon logging back in, I couldn’t find any indication in my account that I’d been given an offer. Wanting to continue to study the offer, my dumbass resubmitted another inquiry, and this time, it told me to await more information in the mail.

Fast forward to now, I have been sent two credit cards, but I only need one. I’ve yet to activate either, but wanted to know more about if I were to close the second one.

I called customer service, who said they could not discuss specific credit info, and I’d need to inquire with the credit bureau.

Surely, it’s not uncommon for people to open credit cards and decide not to accept the offer, right? Couldn’t I just close it? So I called a “banker” (just more customer service) to generally ask the best way to handle it, and the gist is that closing a credit line is bad, mmkay? (Totally frustrating that they can issue $11,000 in credit, but don’t have answers on how close it!)

I only need/want one credit card, but I’m feeling like at this point, the best thing for my credit is to activate both cards and just let one exist.

As I mentioned, the two cards total total $11,000, which add to the card I’d already been using using for years, at a much more modest limit of $500. Any advice is much appreciated.
