We own a old Amana top loading washing machine. It is probably 15 years old. It works just fine, but needs to be cleaned. The big downside for us is the unit is small (probably 3.5cu feet?) and we are a family of 4 with two little kids who have plenty that needs to be washed every day.

The salesman at Lowes claims that we would be saving a lot of money over a year since the energy usage would be so much better ( and running larger loads each cycle).

I am in the camp that the top loaders are more reliable. I guess this is a combo "BIFL" question as well as ... should I do this to save some cash in the long run?
