It may not be useful for short-term money problems, but if you go to the grocery store, always check the produce aisle for things that are on sale. Tomatoes, scallions, lettuce, celery, etc. These are easiest to plant. All you need is soil and water. Get small pots from thrift store/Dollar store. I started composting my kitchen waste in a large pot - coffee grounds, tea leaves, egg shells, bread, vegetable peels and now it gives me enough nutrient rich soil. It does not take a lot of space to create a garden. Just a small sunny spot in the house or in the patio. I do not have a green thumb, I forget to water my plants often.. but these vegetables are very easy to plant.. at least your salad would be taken care of. Hope it helps.
