Hey guys. I am new to /r/personalfinance. Please refer me to another subreddit if I am in the wrong place. Thanks in advance.

The dilemma that brings me here starts about three months ago when my wife and I found out that her pregnancy resulted in a miscarriage 6-8 weeks in. During the first visit's ultrasound, there was a little heartbeat and something else inside - some sort of blurry dot that was believed to be a potential twin. This resulted in us returning to the clinic the following week for a followup ultrasound. I am including this detail because for every office visit, we owed a payment towards prepayment for the total amount of delivery at a third party hospital. The first visit was $400, and the second visit was $400, on the third visit - which was $300, we found out that the fetus had no heartbeat. That sucked.

Moving on, since that day we have been seeking a refund for the prepayment of the delivery costs, because there is no delivery to be had. Unsurprisingly, this has been an incredibly difficult process. When we finally got ahold of the billing department we were told that the refund would be for $311 and change. I have absolutely no idea where that number is coming from, as I have a payment receipt that clearly states that my wife and I were "prepaying for delivery" at a local regional hospital. We have received bills for labs, ultrasounds, and other costs associated with the office visits. I feel cheated out of the $1,100 that was paid in advance for something that didn't come to be in the end.

I have called the one person who is in charge of the billing dept. for this small clinic three times in the past two days looking for an explanation of the refund amount, to no avail. I have tried calling at different times of day, and I am getting the runaround. There's a long pause, and then I find out that the woman at the extension I need is out of the office or away from her desk, at lunch, etc.. I still have no idea where the $311 is even coming from, and in conclusion, I would really like to have the full amount of the prepayment refunded.

Has anyone encountered a situation like this? How should I go about this moving forward? I am considering calling a local law office for a free consultation, but I thought I'd ask the good people of the internet first.

Thanks.
