This is probably (and hoepfully... I pray that this is it) the worst month in my life. I’m trying to hold it all together for my family’s sake but gosh, it’s hard. Sorry if I seem scatterbrained. I’ve been awake for 2 days now.

My 19 month old has been diagnosed with a very rare cancer and we’re traveling from our home in Iowa to either (we’ve got more options, but these are the top contenders) St Jude’s in Memphis, Children’s National in DC, and some other hospital I can’t currently think of (I’ll get tht from my wife).

We currently make about 55 to 60k a year (I’m a mechanic, she’s a CNA in the middle of nursing school). She’s likely going to quit her job to live in Ronald McDonald housing (bless that charity so much) leaving us with about 30k a year to work with and I don’t feel that this is enough to provide for the twins (both 19 months) and my wife and my mother and pay medical bills.

I feel that my best bet would to relocate my family to my son’s hospital’s area and find work there. That way my mother can still be free day care, and both of us will be able to see our son during the hardest journey of his and everyone else’s lives. It also means my wife could possibly pick up a part time gig instead of just quitting her job completely and having me send money down there for any other living expenses.

St Jude is probably the highest on our list because, even if my son doesn’t qualify for a clinical trial, they’ll pay for treatment if our insurance doesn’t want to pay for the experimental treatment (Malignant rhabdoid tumors have some of the worst prognosis rates of all cancers and doctors still haven’t figured out a course of action for this cancer). However, I have no clue about the area and if our jobs would provide.

I’m a little more familiar with the DC area but I know it can be VERY expensive and I’m not sure if our career fields would provide a survivable living there. Please help us
