I am an American citizen planning to move to Japan in a few years to pursue my career, and I plan to stay there. I don't plan to formally renounce my US citizenship (I'd like to) but I was wondering how exactly social security would work if I live in a different country. The few sources I've read have all mentioned different things about it such as being able to redeem early, forfeiting the amount entirely or being able to redeem it while in the other country. I don't think I would care too much about never receiving the social security, but at the same time it seems pointless to keep pulling SS from my paychecks if I'm to never reap the benefits. Basically, I need advice or just answers as to what exactly this social security situation is.
