Hi all.

First time poster here.

Over the past year or so I have started to think seriously about putting some money to work for us. I have been listening to podcasts and reading articles but I’m still not 100% sure of what direction my wife and I would like to go in so I thought I’d get options from people here.

My grandparents have not prepared at all for their retirement and now my grandad is working well into his 70s with really no end in sight to how they might manage their retirement because they just spent money without planning or solid investing.

I am 27 and my wife is 26.

I don’t live in the USA, in fact I am living in Hong Kong where we have platforms through the banks to trade directly on the US Stock Exchange. All numbers I quote below will be in USD for convenience and ease of reading.

So let’s start with the financials. First and foremost what we earn. My wife and I earn a combined salary of $135,000 annually. From this we pay $38,300 annually in rent. Bills are fairly cheap and all up come to just over $200 a month. We have great health care from the company so that’s not an expense and we pay around 10% tax each year. It is common place in Asia to get a 13th month of salary as a bonus however we don’t rely on it.

Combined we have $41,000 in savings right now as we have just paid for a fairly expensive wedding.

I have a student loan from all of my training however my wife is debt free. My loan is currently $75,900 and on that I pay an annual interest rate of 4.6%.

I have always been interested in property as a means of long term investment however the more people I listen to, the more I become interested in a long term growth stock portfolio with a solid level of diversification.
