Hello. A few years ago my wife and I decided to reevaluate our car insurance. We felt we were paying too much and we're right. So we shopped around and ended up going with Geico because they provided the lowest monthly premium at the coverage level we wanted. Now Geico only does 6 month policies. The rate goes up between $5-$8 every six months when the policy "renews". I'm getting sick of this. At this point we're paying close to what we were paying under our old policy (which has the convenience of a 12 month policy and they raised our premium only slightly year over year).

We are both good safe drivers with 2012 vehicles. Neither of us has ever needed to use this policy. We have no accidents or moving violations on our records. We already receive the "discounts" we qualify for (the whole discounts thing seems like a scam to me anyway). We also "bundle" home and auto currently. If I switch my auto policy it could impact the amount of my homeowner's policy then which could impact my monthly mortgage obligation.

Do we need to just shop around again? I'm terrified of doing this again. The last time we got an endless stream of junk mail, email offers, phone calls, etc trying to get us to select their insurance and I couldn't make it stop. As I understand it they all share information with each other so when you make an inquiry about a policy they all are notified and start sending you junk mail.

When I actually call Geico they sort of just give me the run around about the premium hikes. I ask what justifies the rise in the cost every 6 months and all they can say is that it's typical and nothing they can do. I get that the people I'm talking to don't set the policy rates but they should at least be able to explain why our rates are going up $5-$8 per month every 6 months. That increase is not sustainable long-term. I'm wondering if other people are seeing this with Geico/other insurers as well?

It almost feels like they hook you with a low premium at first and then jack them up slowly over time hoping you A) won't notice and B) will be too lazy to shop around/don't want all your information sold to everyone in the world.
