For background, I am a newly-hired contract worker making $16/hr (40 hours max) for a well-known, major company with a fantastic reputation internally and externally. My contract lasts through January, and it's possible/probable that it could be extended. Also, contractors are the first considered for new openings, which my manager disclosed will be happening in the next few months due to some recent promotions and relocations.
I did some research and found that rent can/should be ~30% of your median income before taxes. $950/mo out of $32k/yr is around 37%, which is obviously over, but close. On top of this, I have an advantage in that I do not currently have a car payment, as my vehicle is inherited, and I do not have student loan debt or any other debts. The bills that I currently pay are $75 for my cell phone plan, $100 for car insurance, and roughly $100-120 for gas monthly. I also have $15k in savings and am building an investment account.
Most of the decent 1BR/1BA apartments near my work (which would shave 20-30 minutes off my current commute) are around $900-950, which is how I came up with the number. I would go in with a roommate, but most of my friends live too far from my work. (Still a possibility.)
I am a 24 yo single female and I live with my parents, and have never lived away save for a year at college. If this whole post sounds sounds weird or if I seem naive, that's probably why. I am in an emotionally abusive situation (hence the throwaway), and I am wanting to finally move out within the next month or two. I don't think I can wait the 6+ months to see if I get promoted. I understand that I may go into debt, but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make for the sake of my mental health. Any advice is appreciated.
