The curtains I had in my living room and bedroom weren't blackout types, so I bought blackout liners by the yard from Joann. They had the liners 40% off (sometimes they have a 60% off coupon), and it cost me nearly $40 to do both rooms. I spent a day sewing the liners to the curtains and put them back up, and the difference was stark between no liner and liner.

As a result, we can keep our thermostat set 2-3 degrees warmer. We just got our new electric bill and it went down $30. This is July, and we live in the American South, so it's hot.

Now I know this won't work for everyone, but if you can sew, or have a friend who can sew, it might be worth it for you.
