I figured I would share this because it is something I’ve always been mindful of and I am confident it has saved me hundreds of dollars. I notice a lot of packaging lately has been extremely wasteful. So here are some helpful tips I keep in mind, if you have any please share!
Products with a pump dispenser (such as hand soap, face wash, etc) - a full pump is typically a lot of product, so try a half pump and see if it is adequate, just how much you need to pump will depend largely on the product and personal preference. I noticed a full pump of the face wash I use is extremely excessive so I use about a third of a pump, tripling the amount of uses for each bottle.
Shaving cream- this one is a little more tricky. I’ve noticed some brands of shaving cream will continue to “leak” some product after dispensing it. One brand of shaving cream I used to have would leak about a half dollar coin amount of product after dispensing. The product that leaked would obviously get wasted, this adds up very quickly! I decided to switch brands to solve this.
Shampoo or body wash- I noticed a lot of companies coming out with new, more modern looking bottles of shampoo. While the bottles do look nice, most are not impossible to set upside down, making using the last bit of product challenging. Typically generic brands don’t do this.
Bar soap- this one is pretty obvious but I thought I would share it anyway. If you use a bar of soap use a loofa or washcloth instead of applying directly to your body, it will make the bar last much longer and I find loofas lather up much better anyway.
Contact solution- I noticed my contact cases that come with my solution are actually pretty large compared to the lenses themselves. I find that filling the case only halfway is adequate and it makes your bottle of solution last much longer.
Toothpaste- another somewhat obvious one here. Often in the commercials they apply huge amounts of paste on to the brush when in reality you don’t need nearly that much as most falls of and gets wasted.
Liquid carpet cleaner- if you have a carpet cleaning machine make sure you thoroughly read the label on the bottle of the carpet cleaner. I have noticed many are now concentrated 2x, meaning you should only use half of what you normally use and dilute with water.
Laundry pods- I find that on the labels of laundry pods it often recommends using two or even three pods depending on the amount of garments. I have always found that one pod is adequate but your mileage may vary.
That’s about all I can think of for now. There are always exceptions to these rules but in general I find that they have worked out pretty well for me. As always your mileage may vary. If you have any I didn’t mention I would love to hear them!
