Disclaimer: Please bare with me on this one. I understand Apple products come at a premium and no technology is strictly BIFL and I know they have a fanboy cult but I am wondering if the premium does equate to better longevity.

Im curious if my 'personal experiences' with technology are consistent with reality or if I have brought into marketing hype. Let me explain with an example, though-out my lifetime I have owned 4 computers:

  • Old Childhood PC - Lasted 3 years and was painfully slow towards the end

  • Apple Powermac G5 - Lasted 5 years and sold due to PC build below (still was usable at time of sale, although there was some planned obsolescence involved with software because Apple moved over to Intel chips and this started to create incompatible software. Im sure this was a once in history event as Intel now dominate the chip market)

  • Custom i5 PC Build - Lasted 3 years before it became bloated and painfully slow

  • Apple Imac i5 - Has lasted 6 years and is still going strong. It has slowed down a tad but is still lightyears above what a Windows would be at this stage.

So throughout my own experience every windows computer has been absolutely rubbish at the 3 year mark and yet the Apple computers have still been usable at 5+ years. I understand they come at a premium but im wondering if they are a close BIFL product of if I have just had a unique experience and perhaps brought junk windows builds. Windows builds are obviously cheaper but if they last 30% less time then the cost probably balances out.

Anyone have any thoughts on this and what a good BIFL computer is?
