Last week my marriage ended very unexpectedly. I’m 31, and had been married for 3 years/together for 10 years. I’m moving out of my apartment, with my dog in a very high COL area during the worst month of the year to move.

I’m not rich. Maybe in middle America, but not in my expensive coastal city.

Because I have an emergency fund, I can afford to write a check for security and first months rent (and maybe a dog deposit) in the middle of the month even though I already paid rent on my current place for the whole month. Because I have an emergency fund, I don’t need to argue with my wife about who gets to keep x thing. Because I have an emergency fund, I can continue to provide food and proper care for my dog. Because I have an emergency fund m, I have one less thing to stress-cry about every night.

My emergency fund will certainly be sad and small when all of this is over. But if I hadn’t built it up, I’d have to cash out my (small) retirement account or IRA.

If you’re on the fence about saving that extra $$$ every week just do it. I thought I’d never need that emergency fund - 2 weeks ago my wife and I were talking about using it to put a down payment on a house in the country. Glad I saved when I could, and even when I felt like I couldn’t.
