To cut the story short- I recently got a new job which is paying me almost double what I originally was making at my current job. I don’t start the new job for another week but salaried at 40K annual income. I wanted to stay living at home with parents until I graduated college- I just started this year but it’s a online school where I can finish as many or as little classes as possible. At my own paste basically. I pay out of pocket for school- I don’t want to do loans. I recently have gotten into a few disagreements and arguments with another sibling to the point where I overheard my mother telling them that she is considering kicking me out of the house. I get along with everyone in my house with the exception of that younger sibling- quite honestly- my parents have been looking for an excuse to make me leave their home since the found out my new income, not because they hate me- we get along quite well, they just want me out- well- they found their reason. Now I need to prepare.
I was building up my savings and had a negative net worth this time last year. I paid off my car loan and credit card debt by the end of last year and am debt free. I pay for school out of pocket. Alas- my savings is gone due to medical bills on top of now I have to replace some parts in my car... not going to be a cheap repair by any means. So right now- if I were to get kicked out tomorrow, I’m screwed. I don’t have enough money for a deposit nor for the first month of rent. I have about $200 in savings currently (I was at almost $2K before all this happened!)
I need to budget and figure out my options. After taxes, I’m taking home a little over $1300 bi-weekly with the new job. I get paid twice a month so that puts me at $2600 monthly income. My school tuition is roughly $900 a month. Gas $50, food $100. Car insurance and phone bill $240 between the two. I rent a storage shed for $50 a month, but I likely will get rid of it if I get my own place. Oh I do have a orthodontic work which costs me $100 a month as well. That puts me at $1060 left over a month roughly with current expenses. I try to be as minimalistic as possible with my bills and avoid subscriptions.
I don’t want to have to pick between a roof over my head and my school- and I’m too stubborn for a loan (and I don’t qualify for scholarships at this time..). A lot of places for rent around here are going to cost me $700-800 on up depending and that won’t factor in utilities, internet, etc- that’s just for rent.. This is with considering a roommate too. I am stressing out over my situation as $200 left over while a lot... just is not a lot of cushion to build off of. And as mentioned earlier- I could be getting kicked out tomorrow, or next month for all I know. But what I do know, is that if it were to happen tomorrow, I’m screwed. I have nothing in my savings after my car and medical bills. Nothin for a security deposit or the first month of rent. What would I do then? Obviously until it happens- I know I need to save up as much as possible before then. I won’t start my new job until another week- and I won’t be getting those paychecks until early next month, it won’t hurt me too bad as my current job will fill in that cushion of money between now and then to though. I just won’t get those $1300 biweekly paychecks for a bit.
I just feel lost, scared, and unprepared. I originally wanted to finish school before I moved out so I had more room to work with. Not to mention I was hoping I’d have a decent amount in savings by then too... but here we are. I need some help from you guys on what to do. I apologize for this being long- I’m a bit of a mess and I’ve been trying to go through these options for the last few hours since I overheard this conversation... but would feel better getting second opinions and offering input and advice.
