Little background: was effectively disabled and out of the workforce for a number of years due to a mental health condition. After a rather miraculous procedure I went into remission at 27 and shortly thereafter enrolled in a pretty intense web dev bootcamp. Built up a portfolio and did the job search for a while. Now after years of being bedridden and having virtually no income I'm making ~70k a year, with benefits. Because I am very fortunate and my parents helped me with school expenses / paid for my medical treatment, I have zero debt. My credit score is solid. I'm planning as if this isn't a reality, but frankly I can expect a financial windfall at some point in the future via inheritance. I can't think of much that I want / need outside of upgrading my car to something simple that has working air conditioning and not eating plain pasta every night. I've learned to live on next to nothing and frankly I'm not opposed to continuing to live a very frugal lifestyle. Would it be wise to seek out the assistance of a financial advisor? If so, is there a good resource for finding someone reliable? Not sure if it's one of those fields full of predatory business practices or not. Chief among my concerns is that my girlfriend and I are looking to get married and I'm not sure how that will impact things -- she has significant college debt and not stellar credit. Her job isn't the most lucrative, which is totally fine, but she's on income based repayment and I'm not sure if student loan collectors take into account joint income? I wouldn't be opposed to helping her pay her loans off, I just want to be prepared if her bills are gonna skyrocket. I've read the basics under how to handle money -- got all bills paid in full, building a nice emergency fund, contributing to retirement, etc. I guess the long and the short of it is this all feels very surreal after such a long period of stress and intense depression. It's a huge lifestyle change and I guess I'd just like any tips from anyone who's gone through a similar change. Thanks!
