We are fresh back from a driving vacation around one of the great lakes. This included a couple of national parks as well as a ferry boat ride to an island. When we got home, I was anxious to tally up the expenditures.

Here's how we ended up:

Entertainment: $300 = $50/day. Included a day at an amusement park as well as the ferry to the island.

Food: $287 = $48/day. 6 full days for family of 5. (Some of the kids are pretty young, so they eat less, and can order "kid's menu" items.) All of our hotels offered a free breakfast. This also includes fun snacks like fudge, ice cream, and car snacks. Of the 12 meals we had to pay for, we did 2 by making runs to a local grocery store for sandwiches, yogurt, fruit, etc.

Lodging: $513 = $86/day. Booked online with sites like hotwire. Technically I used points for 2 of the nights, but I added in an estimated value here so I would know what the real cost was.

Misc: $37 = $6/day. Had to pick up a few items at Target/Walmart.

Transportation: $525 = $88/day. Includes gas + $.25/mile wear and tear + tolls over 1400 miles.

Total was $1662 = $277/day. I'm pretty happy with that. We wanted to make sure we all had a good time and that we weren't unnecessarily tight. But we of course watched our dollars.
