You can't always get this to happen, but when the frugal stars align here's what you do:
- find big ticket item you need to buy on ebay. Which usually itself has a discount compared to MSRP
- During grocery store 5% back season, go to grocery and buy ebay gift cards $200 at a time. Participating stores near me are Price Chopper & Shaws. I know this is only for the northeast, but maybe these exist all over the country.
- get 2% cashback in fuel savings (depends on the size of your fuel tank). You get 10c off per gallon for each $100 spent. if your tank is 20 gallons (the max they allow), then you save $2 every $100 you spend. ie 2%.
- ebay then gives you 2% ebay bucks for future purchases.
5% + 2% + 2% = 9%
pro tip: save the card number b/c if you need to return something to the ebay seller, the refund goes back to the card. And ebay is hoping you threw it away as it's nowhere to be found in their web app.
